YPD AustraliaYPD Australia started in 2004 after we sent two participants to YPD 2004 in Thailand - Catherine Noone and Mayra Walsh. Since then we have launched a YPD fundraising program that has raised more than $5000 AUD ($USD4000) since the end of 2005. Now we are proud to host YPD 2008 which will be held in July 2008 in conjunction with the Green World Youth Day program to be held in the lead up to World Youth Day. We are also planning the launch of an EcoSolidarity? project to sell carbon credits to raise funds for Green WYD and YPD environment and development projects. As part of our preparation, we hope to welcome a team of international volunteers to work with us on these projects. 2007-2008 YPD Australia Volunteer Programme:The YPD Australia Volunteer program aims to:
GOAL I: ECO-SOLIDARITY TRUST Update and Background In the long-term, a more in-depth and independent structure needs to be set-up to fully insure the stability and support of the YPD. As a network, financial and other resource back-up needs to be put into place. The World Youth Day organizers are very much aware of the need to offset the carbon emission that the participants will have and some companies already started to submit proposals for our bid. We have an edge over the others but we still have to get our acts together to creatively gain support without breaking our backs. Setting up the trust would ensure stability not only for this volunteer program but sustain other incoming projects. To be done: 1.INCORPORATION OF YPD (November 15th)
2.SET-UP AN ECO-SOLIDARITY TRUST (November 25, 2007)
3.MARKETING PLAN INCLUDING TEST MARKETING OF CARBON CREDITS (NOVEMBER)
4.IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CARBON OFFSET INITIATIVE WHOLE-YEAR
GOAL II: HOUSING COOPERATIVE PROJECT In many ways, Australia kept up with its identity as a frontier. Immigrants are still coming into the country. On the one hand, the real estate perspectives are very bright. An alternative model that Australia YPD can seriously look into is the welcoming or the integration of ‘visitors’ to the community. Background and update The real estate market in Melbourne is in full bloom. The prices of the properties soared high in this year. In the business perspective, this looks good on our side. At the parish and even outside of it, Melbourne being a university city and a melting pot of migrants, we can see people who long to have a ‘community’ to go home to. A housing project is a good venue for this to be addressed and YPD can be an alternative model to follow. As international volunteers will be in Melbourne for a year, the exchanges and community living would be in-depth and meaningful. TO BE DONE : 1.PURCHASE OF A COMMUNITY HOUSE (legal structure under consideration) TWO-WEEKS
2.PREPARATION (wait for the legal settlement period) END JANUARY
3.CAMPAIGN FOR TENANTS ONE MONTH
4.LAUNCHING FEBRUARY
GOAL III: ORGANIZE THE 2008 YPD STUDY SESSION IN AUSTRALIA In July 2008, ‘down under’ will be the destination of choice by travellers all over. The holding of the WYD in Sydney will be the focal point to hundreds of thousands of participants at the local and international level. Keeping the advocacy of a green world youth day and the deepening of the YPD understanding on ecology, the next YPD session will be held in Australia in July 2008. Update The YPD study session will be unique this year as it will collaborate more closely with the Holy Eucharist Parish and the Green WYD program. The YPD study session program-flow and model will be used. The program is more open to anyone interested to undergo the session. This is strictly imposed to maintain integrity of our sessions. There is a possibility that we shall have more participants now (or less!). However, the program is highly publicized through the Green World Youth Day Program. We also need to plan for a specific YPD event (General Assembly) to be incorporated into the overall program. Logistics and details of the Green World Youth Day and YPD study session is still underway. We need your suggestions on how to get things moving. TO BE DONE: 1.PROGRAM FLOW AND DESIGN NOV 07- JAN 08
2.LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS DECEMBER-MARCH
3.PARTICIPATION DEADLINE: MAY ‘08
GOAL IV: TO LAUNCH LOCAL YPD GROUPS IN AUSTRALIA The Green World Youth Day Program generated much attention and cooperation particularly in Melbourne. The volunteer program is picked up with warmth and interest. To sustain the synergy, local YPD groups must be organized. We identified Melbourne University, the community of St. Alban’s or the city of Melbourne and one in Sydney as potential groups. An inter-faith group of the university is also taking shape. This is a potential group that we can nurture a most of its member are young and best fits the YPD identity of multiculturality. One of the targets of the volunteer programs is to encourage the local people to form themselves into working groups in order to continue the efforts initiated by the volunteers. Creativity and much personal contacts/follow-ups should inspire the local people. TO BE DONE: 1.PROVIDE ASSISTANCE & VISIBILITY TO V.U. CAMPUS Nov-1st week march
2.IDENTIFICATION OF POTENTIAL LEADERS AND TRAINING SIX MONTHS
3.COMMITMENT AND ORGANIZING PHASE LAST 4 MONTHS (TO INTERLAP WITH THE TRAINING)
