Young People for Development Cambodia (YPD Cambodia) is a Cambodian NGO registered in 2007 and specializes in the dissemination of sustainable development solutions.

YPD Cambodia is one of YPD's youngest chapters, yet it has taken on 2 very important projects this year. Firstly, this very young team lead by its very capable coordinator, Ly Leak,and her merry team, under the guidance of Minh has agreed to host the YPD Annual Training Program and General Assembly 2007.

The team has also taken on one of YPD most toughest projects, Micro-financing, and has been able to make it a success!

This micro-finance project, for the supply of the New Loa Stove to the poor people of at Teak La Ak 3, Phnom Penh, is in association with the Renewable Energy Technology Project (GERES).

The project is to replace the traditional charcoal stoves with the New Lao Stoves that use less charcoal and can cook for a longer period of time. (30% savings on charcoal and wood)

In countries with a majority of low income households such as Cambodia, the use of wood for the purpose of household cooking is a common practice. Unfortunately this has impacted on the forest which is fast disappearing. Therefore wood fuel has become a major concern in Cambodia, and the decreasing supply of wood has begun to create an impact on the livelihood of the poor.

An alternative solution is the New Loa Stove which can help a Cambodian household save up to 30% off their charcoal and wood requirements monthly. The New Lao Stoves that uses less fuel and can keep the fire burning much longer.

Therefore it is not only saving for the house holds, financially but the switch to the new energy saving stove will also be good for the environment.

However most poor families are not in a financial position to purchase this stove on their own. In order to help them YPDC has decided to offer to sell the New Lao Stove to them using the concept of microfinance.

Therefore, this YPDC project has a double aim, providing the necessary New Loa Stoves,to help cut costs and in the long term help to save the environment.

The goal is that YPDC will supply the New Lao Stove to them at market price using micro finance, and the people will take 10 weeks or 2.5 months to repay the loans for the stove. The project will take two and half months to complete pay back of the credit. The proposal is to make the people (more) self reliant and protect the environment.

As at the end of March 2007, YPDC has already sold 25 pots on micro finance!!
